There’s one fundraiser that consistently raises more and more money each year and yet never changes a thing. There’s no fancy theme, no celebrity auctioneer and no tuxedos are required at the Sam Galloway Jr. & Friends Soup Kitchen Benefit, held every March for nearly 15 years. The service bay at Sam’s Ford dealership on Boy Scout Road is transformed into a huge country kitchen where area restaurants serve up southern fare like fried chicken, okra, corn-on-the-cob and biscuits. The décor is simple — think checkered tablecloths and soup-can centerpieces. Sam usually wears jeans and so do the more than 600 guests. Almost always sold-out way in advance the Soup Kitchen Fundraiser attracts all the movers and shakers of Lee County and raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to feed the hungry – because when Sam is the host, people come (save the date for 2018 — March 8).
